-REDFLY helps reporters write and submit scripts from the field for quicker and more accurate story turnaround-
SALT LAKE CITY – June 2, 2009 - Celio Corp today announced that an ABC owned-and-operated station in Flint, Michigan (WJRT-TV) has deployed REDFLY Mobile Companions to its field reporters to more accurately write and submit scripts while on location. The REDFLY Mobile Companion is a smartphone terminal that allows users to connect their Windows Mobile equipped smartphone to a larger screen and keyboard.
Prior to deploying the REDFLYs, ABC 12 used PDAs with Bluetooth keyboards to type and send scripts from the field. They discovered, however, that the keyboards did not stand up to repeated use, and the small screen of the PDA made it difficult to write accurate scripts.
\”We do a large amount of writing from the field, and while the Bluetooth keyboards we were using were decent when we started out, we quickly found they didn\’t hold up, they were not durable,\” said Larry Elliott, news anchor for ABC 12, who also manages the newsroom computer system and the stations smartphones. \”We also still had to use the small screen on the PDA, and for writing longer scripts it proved difficult.\”
Since deploying the REDFLY units, management and producers have seen an increase in typing accuracy from in-field reports and been able to approve scripts more quickly to get those stories on the air much faster than they could in the past.
Elliott continued, \”We can be writing a script while still using the PDA as a telephone, and be communicating with the station and making changes on the script at the same time. We couldn\’t do that if we didn\’t have the REDFLY.\”
The REDFLY links to the smartphone via USB or wireless Bluetooth connection that allows for instant on access. Users are able to read email and attachments, view websites, and use applications that reside on the smartphone for greater mobile productivity.
\”ABC 12\’s use of the REDFLY Mobile Companion speaks volumes about the amount of productivity that can be achieved in a mobile work environment with a larger screen and keyboard,\” said Kirt Bailey, president and CEO of Celio Corp. \”They are demonstrating the way organizations are able to get the most out of their existing smartphone investment without adding the extra costs associated with introducing a new platform and device to manage.\”
